Mexico recovers religious artistic treasures

Rome, Mar (Notimex) .- Some 594 artistic treasures of manifestation of popular Mexican religiosity, illegally preserved in Italy, were restored by the government of that country by the Minister of Culture of Mexico, Alejandra Frausto Guerrero.


It is "ex votos", small religious paintings of gratitude for received graces dating from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which were illegally removed from Mexico in the decade of 1960 and 1970.


 "This restoring exercise on part of the memory of a community is making stronger the language of a community with the world, thanks to that diversity that Mexico has that there can be a dialogue with a cultural power like Italy" said Frausto.


The pieces were recovered in June 2016 after a check in the show " Danos hoy nuestro pan cotidiano. Tablitas dedicadas al tema de la tierra", exhibited in Milan.


The works originally come from temples in the states of Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Veracruz and Zacatecas.
