Polytechnic Institute suggest generating energy from sargasso

Mexico, Jan (Notimex) .- Researchers at the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN, for its acronym in Spanish) are developing a work to generate electricity from the sargasso, the massive algae that affects the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean each year.

The innovation of the researcher Norma Patricia Muñoz Sevilla aims to take advantage of the high potential of this macroalga in the generation of methane gas, through a process of biodigestion.

Muñoz Sevilla warned that the presence of sargassum causes irreversible damage to the Mesoamerican reef, the second largest in the world, since it prevents the penetration of sunlight.
