Mexican scientists develop edible rice-based cutlery

Mexico (Notimex) - Mexican scientists from the Center for Development of Biotic Products have created edible cutlery made with rice bran.

The cutlery serves two purposes: Improve nutrition and contribute to taking care of the environment. 

In Mexico, rice bran is used for cattle feed, due to its short shelf life. But the scientists were able to develop a method to control the bran's oxidization. 

The team in charge of the project includes Adrián Quintero, Javier Villanueva, Guillermina González and Victor Alcántar. 

Tests show that the edible cutlery provides several nutrients such as antioxidants, aminoacids, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B9 and E, as well as minerals including magnesium, zinc and selenium.
