Economy picks up in first quarter: Finance Ministry

Mexico (Notimex) - Mexico's economy continued to recover during the last quarter of 2017 and the first quarter of this year, the Finance Ministry said.

The country's economy  had been affected by the September earthquakes.

One of the highlights in the first quarter was an improvement in external demand, the ministry's report said.

From January to March, the economy grew 1.1 percent compared with the previous quarter, and 2.4 percent from the same period a year ago, statistics agency Inegi said.

Inflation dropped to 5 percent in the first quarter, down 1.7 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2017.

The positive figures a due to, in part, more revenue from the oil industry and better tax income.
