Mexico (Notimex) – For the eighth straight year, Mexico ranked as the world’s leading producer of silver, with 196 million ounces in 2017.
The figure represents an increase of 10 million ounces compared with the previous year, mainly due to the increase in production at the San Julián, Fresnillo and Peñasquito mines.
Following Mexico in silver production are Peru, China, Russia and Chile.
Last year, global production reached 852 million ounces, a 4.1 percent drop from the previous year.
But demand increased, mainly due to industrial applications of silver in China, Japan and the U.S.
