Mexican students create nano device to fight cancer
Mexico (Conacyt) – Using molecular biology and protein engineering, a group of students from Mexico’s Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí have created a medicine nano-transport device.
The device aims to improve the effect of hydrophobic drugs used against cancer.
The students used the protein shell of a virus (known as a capsid) found in peas to create the device, said Jaime Ruiz, director of the University’s Biology Laboratory.
Protein engineering has allowed nanomedicine to reach new levels and offer hope for cancer patients.
“The idea for this study was to prove that virus capsids are effective in medical treatments,” Ruiz said.
