Silao, Guanajuato (Notimex) - The central Mexican state of Guanajuato is making strides towards sustainable tourism through the Training and Awareness program for tourism service companies.
The World Tourism Organization declared 2017 the Year of Sustainable Tourism.
The Guanajuato government said that it has launched actions that aim to achieve the goals set by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
The program included specialized visits to the state's Magical Towns for an evaluation to declare them sustainable destinations, as well as two workshops for business leaders.
As part of the program, the state also applied a tree-planting program and a protected natural park scheme.
Some 37 companies in the state entered the sustainable certification process, and 28 were certified this year, authorities said.
